Mailvelope 6.2.0: Smarter Key Backup
Mailvelope 6.2.0 began rolling out to Chrome users on October 18th. This release introduces a new key backup feature aimed at improving both usability and long-term key security. In addition, it includes several important bug fixes and updates to the testing infrastructure.
Key Backup After Key Generation
After creating a new key pair, Mailvelope now prompts users to save a secure backup of their private key.
Why this matters:
Without a backup, users risk losing access to encrypted messages if they change or reset their devices. The new backup prompt ensures that every user has the chance to export their private key safely and intentionally — reducing the risk of permanent data loss.
How it works:
Once the key generation process is completed in the app UI, users are guided through a backup flow that lets them:
- Download their newly created key pair (private key+public key)
- Store it offline or in a secure backup solution of their choice
What Else Changed in Mailvelope V6.2?
In addition to the new key backup feature, version 6.2.0 includes: Removed outdated De-Mail domains from the default authorized list A legacy feature from earlier e-government integrations has been deprecated.
-
Improved API robustness: We normalized the armored message format in the decrypt container, improving compatibility with malformed messages.
-
Content script fix: Resolved an issue with script injection after domain authorization.
-
Test infrastructure overhaul: We’ve migrated to Jest, React Testing Library (RTL), and Puppeteer — laying the foundation for faster and more reliable future development. You can find the full list of changes here: Mailvelope v6.2.0 on GitHub
