Who we are

Mailvelope started as an Open Source project in 2012, offering PGP encryption for webmailers as a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. In 2015, Mailvelope GmbH was founded for services and support around the project.

The project grew quickly in popularity, getting integrated by major German webmail providers like WEB.DE, GMX, Freenet, Posteo, and providing support for Gmail and other major webmailers. Currently it reaches over 250.000 users worldwide.

Today, the product suite also includes Mailvelope’s own key server, and Mailvelope Business, a paid subscription service adding mail encryption to our clients’ Google Workspaces.

Our small team is fully remote, you will enjoy high flexibility over where and when you want to work. We are also happy to offer the opportunity for part-time work.

Additionally, your code will contribute to a renowned Open Source project.

We are looking for an experienced developer with a solid understanding of web technologies, in particular JavaScript, capable of independent operation with minimal supervision. This position is intended for professionals with extensive experience and is not suitable for entry-level or junior developers.

The role is offered on a consultant basis for an initial three-month term. Transition to long-term employment is desired.

Key responsibilities

  • Identify and resolve existing bugs in the extension
  • Develop and implement new features
  • Ensure the performance, efficiency, security, usability and scalability of the application
  • Collaborate with our team to understand project requirements and deliver technical solutions

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in browser extension development
  • Strong understanding of UI, cross-browser compatibility, general web functions and standards
  • Strong understanding of PGP and encryption standards
  • Expert understanding of Google Chrome APIs
  • Experience with Chrome Web Store and understanding of internal enterprise apps
  • Experience in deploying Google Chrome Extensions
  • Experience with test-driven development
  • Understanding of JS tech stack, including React, Bootstrap, Webpack, HTML5, CSS3, Web User Interface Design (UI), node.js etc.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to produce clean, well-documented code.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via text chat and video conference in English
  • Ability to work and learn independently
